Songwriting Coaching
When melody, lyrics, and chords combine to create a song, something magic happens.
I love helping folks discover the songs that only they can write.
I love helping folks discover the songs that only they can write.
In private songwriting coaching we'll dive into your music together and find your voice as a songwriter. I'll meet you right where you're at, and help you develop all the tools you need to create deeply compelling songs, from lyrical considerations like point of view and rhyme scheme to musical elements like chord progressions and melody. We'll work through creative blocks and use exercises and writing prompts to explore new ways to approach songwriting. Along the way I'll provide constructive feedback on your work, and help you perform your original music with power and confidence.

Songwriting coaching sessions are one hour. In that time we can cover specific topics you want to learn more about, or I can give you feedback on two to three songs per session.
Private songwriting coaching is especially helpful if you already have some songwriting experience. If you're totally new to songwriting, I recommend starting with my online group class Unlock the Song Inside: Beginning Songwriting. I also offer an Intermediate Songwriting Class and monthly Queer Songwriter Circles for more advanced songwriters.

"Eli is such a wonderful teacher! I feel like I grow with each lesson he gives. His feedback is specific and kind and he's always open to whatever style you bring to the table."
Location
Online sessions take place on Zoom.
In-person sessions take place in Sacramento, CA, in the Tahoe Park area.
Accessibility & Allergen Info
There are three stairs up to the porch to enter the house. I have a chair without arms available for students to sit.
My home is completely fragrance-free, but I do have some students who wear body products with fragrances. There is a cat in the house who is not allowed in my teaching studio. If you have chemical sensitivities or a severe feline allergy, please let me know and I will run an air purifier the day of your lesson.
If you have other access needs or requests, please let me know when you sign up for lessons and I will do my best to accommodate.
Cost (Sliding Scale)
Songwriting coaching sessions are one hour, and students pay on a sliding scale. I am grateful to Alexis J. Cunningfolk of Worts and Cunning Apothecary and Hadassah Damien of Ride Free Fearless Money for inspiring my approach:
Redistributor: $120
Consider paying at this level if one or more of the following apply: You are comfortably able to meet your basic needs such as food, housing, healthcare, and childcare, own a newer car, own your home or rent a higher end property, have access to financial savings, have reliable work or do not need to work to meet your needs, have investments, can afford to travel every year, have expendable income.
Payer Forward: $100
This is the true cost of lessons. In order to cover my expenses and pay myself a living wage, I need most people to choose this tier or above.
Consider paying at this level if one or more of the following apply: You sometimes stress about meeting basic needs (food, housing, healthcare, childcare, etc) but still regularly achieve them, are able to buy some new items and thrift others, can travel every couple/few years without burden, have some debt but it does not prevent access to basic needs/wants.
Sustainer: $80
Consider paying at this level if one or more of the following apply: You have very limited expendable income, are unemployed or have unstable employment but are still able to meet basic needs such as food, housing, healthcare, and childcare, have little or no access to savings or financial support from family, have higher debt that requires some sacrifices on needs/wants.
Pay-What-You-Can: $40 - $60
I reserve two pay-what-you-can sessions on my calendar per month. Priority for these sessions goes to folks who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color, trans women and trans femmes, folks raised working class or poor, and people with disabilities. Please consider this option only if you struggle to meet your basic needs such as food, housing, healthcare, and childcare, and paying more would be a significant hardship.
